Cavaliers v Eclipse Printing CC 1st XI on Tue 02 Aug 2011 at 6 pm
Eclipse Printing CC Won by 16 runs
Match report
The Date – Tuesday 2nd August
The Venue – Cathedral School
The Opposition – Shield game Vs. Cavaliers
A warm summer’s evening … yes that’s right a warm summer’s evening greeted the mighty Eclipse as the team gathered in the new clubhouse at the hallowed cathedral school’s ground.
Brizer was so impressed he had brought his trunks to languish in the sumptuous showers!
The mood was buoyant for this shield fixture but would we continue with our success against the Cavaliers…..
Winning the toss for once, we elected to bat …. And the first over was a lively one – pitch was firm and served up a few bouncers from Cavaliers opener Graveson with early results as Storky waived his bat catching a thick edge and being caught for 1.
Out strode Nilu, who dodged the bullets sensibly playing himself in – prepared to run in the stifling heat and nudge the singles.
Mikey Williams didn’t settle in for too long, bowled by Mr Graveson and made way for Skip Collyer who set about establishing himself. Unfortunately it didn’t go to plan as just getting into his timing he belted one down the fielder’s throat (although he juggled it before hanging on) – out for 17.
Out stepped Billy Bonelle – he looked calm but as usual didn’t listen to my advice “there’s plenty of runs Nilu’s prepared to run so just keep it on the deck no heroics” – out for 3 caught going for a big cut on the offside!
Gihan takes the strike and lifts a magnificent six but he’s caught going for another big hit on the boundary
Nilu exchanging more partners than a Bangkok lap dancer continues as he has done so often this season and showed great tenacity and guile as he continued to chalk up the runs.
Enter Brizer Condon and a change of umpires as GOK and Billy take up their positions.
The assembled gallery commented upon some of the very camp signalling first from our own style guru Gok stork and then - living up to his stage billing (who else could wear those green sneakers) Billy (Elliott) boneless … I think we have a new category for end of season awards!
Back to the cricket … Brizer with his pate bared starts calling for the scoreboard to be kept ticking over (funny I thought was his job as he was batting!)
More camp umpiring as 4 byes and wide’s are signalled with gay abandon adding to the ever growing total – then Nilu going for a return run is out on 46 – blaming the tight fitting shirt for his lack of mobility!
“Gavala” Coles enters the fray and with his all action style is soon confounding the bowler and confusing the fielders but runs anyway! Amongst the mayhem of shouting, no ball, wide’s … more gay signalling…. Gav is eventually out for a short, if not spectacular, innings of 5!
A rampaging “buckets” Condon is out for another useful contribution of 13 and Courty (defending his average) is not out along with the ever present (F….ing hell this is getting a regular occurrence) Steve Parker!
Eclipse sets a total of 135 to win.
Could the Cavaliers – who had toiled in the field, assail the target set!
Ominous signs as the Cavaliers batsmen set about their task with gusto – despite an early wicket taken by Brizer – whose bowling this season has been brilliant – some excellent fielding forced the Cavaliers to take a few chances and despite their number 4 batsmen, Jim Marchant, doggedly staying around Cavaliers wickets began to tumble.
Tis true that in fading light I miss-fielded twice dropping a catch in the process (I thought a man of my reputation and advancing years did well to get anywhere near it!)
Sure, extras did help us out (they gave us 24 wide’s) but another good all round performance ensured victory.
