Eclipse Printing CC Lost by 62 runs

Match report The Date: Tues 9th August
The Venue: St Fagan’s (main pitch)
The Occasion: Shield game v’s Chartered Trust

With no sign of THUNDER or WET WET WET in the air, and THE SHADOWS lengthening at this late time in the season, the SIMPLE MINDS of the Eclipse team gathered for second shield game of the season, KEANE to continue the good work after beating the old foes of The Cavaliers in the previous week.

Skip tossed, and yet again called wrong (what a JAMES BLUNT...) and Eclipse were sent into the field.
Missing the BOYZONE of the Williams brothers, Eclipse needed the GENESIS of a new opening bowling partnership of Davey Nash and Fari, who were NO DOUBT hoping to limit THE STROKES made by the dangerous Chartered Trust batsmen.
Despite Nasher bowling the opener Parvis for just 2, the Chartered batsmen managed to take the STING out of our bowling attack, and made steady progress with Davey getting 1-22 and Fari 0-17 off their opening three overs each.
First change bowlers of THE MAMA’s AND THE PAPA’s (aka Luke and ‘the daddy’ Campbell) didn’t fare much better despite some good effort on their part, and the Daddy bowling the big-hitting Steve Mohring for 19. Unfortunately this just opened THE DOORS for brother Craig to come to the crease. QUEEN and PUFF DADDY ended with figures of 0-19 and 1-31 respectively, but crucially the slower pace of the daddy’s bowling was noticed to have caused some big problems (in between the MASSIVE ATTACK of boundaries that were mashed by the Mohring brothers!) and gave us a taste of what we were to face later.
I now must mention our fielding, which was complete GASH (OK, that’s not a band name, but I felt it needed some emphasis!)
Several fielders managed to allow balls to drift just over them that were either ‘miles away from them’ (their version of events) or ‘right through their hands if they’d really wanted to try and catch them’ (everyone else’s version of events). It was a TRAVISty (wrong spelling I know, but throw me a fricking bone here!). There were instances of throwing like a girl, running like a spaz and generally fielding like CHARLATANS all over the place that hasn’t been like us all season.
Gav was placed on the leg side boundary for the dangerous Craig Mohring, who promptly hit a hard, high, aerial shot right at him. Gave stretched, stepped back, turned his ankle in the dip by the clubhouse, and promptly hit the deck like a LED ZEPPELIN while the ball sailed for six right where he’d been stood a second before. It was looking like it wasn’t going to be our day.
THE ROLLING STONES of Chartered Trust gathered no moss, but they were certainly gathering runs in a BLUR and Si and Dyl were treated with the same distain when they came on to take the last six overs of the innings. They took a wicket each of the opener Singh (caught by ‘safe hands’ Simon off Dyl), and Craig Mohring (caught by Storky off Simon). This slowed things a little, and Dyl nearly became our only bowler to get 2 wickets but couldn’t hold a sharp c&b chance. Still, it was a quid.
So, to win this game Eclipse had to get INXS of 154, and with several players missing a NEW ORDER for the batting was needed.
Fari joined our very own MEATLOAF to open the order, but with us needing to go like a bat out of hell, Gok played around a straight one from Owen and we were 1 for 1 off 1 over.
Fari played himself in nice and gently.... for one ball..... then TAKE THAT! he spanked a mighty six onto the bowling green.
The in-form Nilu had joined Fari at the crease, and was suddenly without a partner when Fari holed out in the third over for 13. We were in DIRE STRAITS now, and skip went out to join Nilu in the middle. They steadied the ship with a nice six and a couple of fours over the next few overs, but unfortunately the runs just weren’t coming as quickly as were needed and Nilu was eventually given the ELBOW, bowled by Singh for 12.
Simon was his replacement, but with Chartered Trust bringing on slower and slower bowlers and the ball was not getting up off a slow damp pitch and scoring became an ordeal.
The Eclipse batmen certainly couldn’t be accused of a lack of effort. A lack of talent maybe, but certainly not effort! Skip gave his obligatory couple of chances to the fielders, but they were unable to take them as we got ever more frantic trying to keep up with the run rate.
Si fell caught for 10, and went to join the increasingly CROWDED HOUSE of fallen batsmen in the pavilion. Luke, our very own pri-MADONNA came to the crease, and quickly got some runs by playing some nice shots rather than SIMPLY (RED) trying to PULP the ball out of the park.
Unfortunately he then quickly got out too, to let in Gav, (aka one of the RIGHTEOUS BROTHERS for their familial disbelief that they are ever out!) who doggedly tried to get some runs – and tried hard not to be run out for once!
Needing about 4 a ball by now, Skip finally found a fielder that could catch and departed for 33, with Andy (one of the famous Court BROS) next in.... and next out too bowled for 0.
The Daddy made a rare batting appearance, and managed to make a costly mistake by turning down a run. Not a costly mistake in the scope of the game (which was well and truly lost by now), but as he was stumped the following ball for 0, it was costly to him as he then got fined for a duck!
Dyl and Gav saw out the last few balls and we closed on 83 for 8, well short of the total needed, but at least we weren’t all out!
So, a lesson or two to be learned (hopefully) and certainly lots to MUSE over before we play the CBBies next week. We’re not out of the shield yet, but we need a big final effort to end the season on a high.
